A violent head-on collision on State Route 67, just west of Ramona near Dye Road, left one person dead and at least one other seriously injured Wednesday evening. The crash involved a silver Nissan and a black Ford SUV and was first reported around 6:00 p.m. Emergency responders from Cal Fire and Heartland Fire arrived on scene, with Medic 227 transporting one patient by ground and medical helicopter REACH 21 airlifting another. A third victim was found in full cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly after responders arrived.
Fire crews worked to extricate at least one occupant who was trapped in the wreckage, while CHP shut down the highway in both directions to facilitate rescue operations and investigation. Traffic was rerouted via Archie Moore Road and Highland Valley Road during the extended closure, which lasted into the evening hours.
There were possibly as many as six patients involved in the crash, though the full extent of injuries and transports has not been confirmed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and officials have not released the names of those involved. SR-67 is a known high-risk corridor for collisions in eastern San Diego County, and Wednesday’s incident adds to the growing concern over safety on this stretch of road.
