Hit-and-Run Driver Strikes Man in Downtown San Diego; Victim Hospitalized

A man was hospitalized with serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run collision in downtown San Diego early Friday morning. The incident occurred just after 1:10 AM on May 2 at the intersection of G Street and Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. Witnesses said the victim, a man believed to be unhoused, was pushing a shopping cart full of recyclables when he was struck by a black sedan traveling eastbound on G Street. The vehicle fled the scene without stopping, and no further description or license plate information was available. Bystanders rushed to the man’s aid, calling 911 and following dispatcher instructions to control the bleeding. Paramedics arrived and transported the man to UCSD Medical Center as a trauma patient. Police officers accompanying the victim later reported that he lost consciousness again at the hospital. In a disturbing twist, another unhoused woman was seen stealing the victim’s belongings and recyclables after the crash. She was detained by responding officers. San Diego Police are investigating the case as a felony hit-and-run. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact SDPD or Crime Stoppers.
