Sedan Spins Into Storm Drain Off I-5

Early Sunday morning, a red sedan spun off the northbound I-5 freeway just before the J Street exit and landed in a storm drainage ditch about 10 feet below the road. The incident happened around 12:55 AM on July 6, 2025.

The driver told CHP officers that he swerved to avoid a vehicle moving unusually slowly in front of him, causing his sedan to spin 180 degrees and slide off the freeway. The car came to rest fully on its side within the ditch.

Miraculously, the driver was uninjured and managed to get himself out of the car without assistance. California Highway Patrol officers evaluated him for signs of intoxication, but determined he was sober and not impaired in any way.

Although the crash didn’t result in injuries, the vehicle appeared to be heavily damaged and may be considered a total loss.

CHP is handling the investigation and vehicle recovery.
