SAN DIEGO — An off-duty San Diego police officer was seriously injured in a violent crash early Friday morning when a suspected DUI driver ran a red light and T-boned the officer’s vehicle.
The incident happened just after midnight at the intersection of Skyline Drive and South Woodman Street in southeastern San Diego. The crash involved three vehicles in total.
Responding SDPD officers initially could not access the injured officer, who was pinned inside his car. A vehicle rescue was called in, but officers on scene managed to pry open the door without requiring full extrication equipment.
The officer was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. The driver who allegedly ran the red light is being evaluated for DUI.
Chula Vista Fire Department responded to the scene to assist with the emergency. SDPD closed the intersection for several hours overnight for a full traffic investigation.
