A deadly solo-vehicle crash occurred early Saturday morning on northbound Interstate 15 in San Diego, just past the 805 split and before the University Avenue exit. At approximately 2:30 a.m., a dark-colored Kia Telluride left the roadway, veered into the dirt shoulder, and struck a eucalyptus tree with significant force. The crash impact violently tore the SUV in half. The front portion, containing the engine and fuel components, caught fire and ignited the tree, creating a fully involved blaze. Meanwhile, the rear section—where the driver remained—spun back into the number one lane of the freeway. The driver, a female, suffered fatal blunt force trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances that led up to the collision. The incident caused temporary closures of the affected lanes as crews responded to the fire and fatality.
