[LA MESA, Tues Sept 8, 11:45 a.m.] An elderly driver was rescued Tuesday morning after his vehicle rolled out of the Brigantine restaurant parking lot near 9340 Fuerte Drive, dropped down a steep embankment and slammed into the lower east end of the same commercial building.

The multi-tenant building houses the restaurant along with several offices and businesses. The vehicle came to rest nose-down and on its driver’s side, wedged against the building and the sidewalk below the lot. A person inside the building at the time said they felt the structure shake and heard the crash.

The driver, a man estimated to be about 80 years old, was trapped inside and unable to get out on his own. The driver told La Mesa police officers he had been maneuvering into a tight parking space when the car suddenly surged forward, according to information relayed at the scene.

Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from Engines 11 and 13, USAR 12 and Truck 14 first stabilized the vehicle to keep it from shifting, then cut open the sunroof to extricate the driver. The man suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital. No other injuries were reported. The extent of damage to the building was not immediately known.
