San Diego police and fire crews responded to a shooting late Friday that left a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the hip in the 4100 block of Chamoune Avenue, in the Teralta East neighborhood. A 42-year-old woman was also transported from the scene, though the reason has not been confirmed.
San Diego Fire-Rescue and medics treated the man’s isolated gunshot wound to the left hip. Police had already controlled the bleeding with direct pressure and combat gauze before medics arrived. Both patients were taken to area hospitals.
At the scene, officers taped off the front yard of an apartment complex on Chamoune Avenue. A few blocks east, near 4058 48th Street, officers said a person matching a suspect description ran into the laundry room of another apartment complex. Officers took the individual into custody and, with weapons drawn, cleared the remainder of the laundry room. SDPD’s watch commander’s office has since confirmed the person taken into custody is the shooter. No firearm has been recovered.
The shooting is one of two violent incidents Friday in San Diego’s Mid-City area. Earlier that day, at about 11:30 a.m., SDPD officers responded to a fatal stabbing in the 4000 block of 39th Street in the Corridor neighborhood. A 33-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene; his 33-year-old common-law wife, who remained on scene with minor injuries, was later booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility on one count of murder, according to police. Investigators have not indicated any connection between the two cases.
