Teen Killed in Lake Murray Crash

[SAN DIEGO (Lake Murray) Sun May 3, 11:36 a.m.] — A 14-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Navajo Road on Sunday morning that also injured a pedestrian and the driver, the San Diego Police Department said.

A 35-year-old woman driving white Mazda sedan westbound in the 7400 block of Navajo Road drove onto the north sidewalk, struck an 18-year-old male pedestrian, and continued forward into a tree in the median, according to SDPD.

The 14-year-old, a passenger in the Mazda, was pronounced dead at the scene. An 8-year-old boy and an infant approximately two weeks old, also passengers, were uninjured. The infant was secured in a car seat. The driver sustained a fractured right ankle. The pedestrian was hospitalized with a concussion and an injury to the left arm.

San Diego Fire-Rescue was dispatched 11:37 a.m. Seven units arrived on scene, including three transporting medics. The driver and pedestrian were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital; the two surviving children were taken to Rady Children’s Hospital. A park ranger applied a tourniquet to the pedestrian’s arm before fire crews arrived, according to medics.

The Mazda came to rest facing west with the front end crushed roughly two feet against a tree in the raised center median, which divides two lanes in each direction. The road runs alongside Mission Trails Regional Park and Mission Trails golf course and driving range. SDPD closed Navajo Road in both directions while traffic investigators worked the scene.

SDPD Traffic Division is handling the investigation. A cause has not been released. SD Slackers will update as the agency provides further information.
