A man suffering from a gunshot wound led San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies on a short pursuit Sunday evening before surrendering near the Grossmont Center shopping area.

According to Sheriff’s officials, deputies located the injured man driving a white sedan in connection with a possible domestic-related shooting. When deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver failed to yield and continued westbound on Interstate 8.

The pursuit ended shortly afterward when the vehicle exited at Grossmont Center Drive and stopped in the 5500 block of the roadway.

Authorities said the driver threw a handgun from the vehicle before exiting and surrendering to deputies.

Multiple Sheriff’s patrol vehicles surrounded the car while deputies ordered the man out at gunpoint. A handgun was visible on the ground near the driver’s side door after the stop.

Deputies provided emergency medical aid at the scene for a gunshot wound to the man’s leg until firefighters from La Mesa Fire Department Engine 12 and an AMR ambulance arrived. The suspect was then transported to a hospital for treatment.

During the incident, Grossmont Center Drive between Center Drive and Fletcher Parkway was temporarily closed while deputies investigated. City officials reported the roadway reopened just before 10 p.m.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances of the shooting that left the man injured.
