An Amazon semi truck crashed early Thursday on northbound Interstate 15 at the Interstate 8 interchange, separating the cab from the trailer and spilling diesel fuel during rainy conditions, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP logs indicate the truck lost control on a downhill section of freeway and struck the center divider. The cab came to rest facing the wrong direction on the left shoulder, while the damaged trailer blocked multiple lanes. The driver was able to exit the vehicle, and the incident was later classified as involving minor injuries.
The crash triggered a hard closure of northbound I-15 lanes, with traffic diverted off I-8 as Caltrans crews responded for cleanup and lane management. CHP reported diesel fuel entering storm drains but later stated no residual fuel remained in the center divider, so HazMat crews were canceled. All lost fuel went into the storm drains, which in San Diego, all lead out to the ocean.
This is the second crash in a few weeks by an Amazon semi truck at this exact location, and third that we have observed in the last 30 days. The December 24th crash on the I-8 west to SR-125 south connector left the cab dangling high over La Mesa streets. The string of crashes has renewed attention on safety concerns of Amazon trucks and their subcontracted drivers along major freeway connectors during wet weather.
