[SAN DIEGO (Grant Hill) Sun Jan 19, 12:26 a.m.]
Two people who were shot and killed on a sidewalk in San Diego’s Grant Hill neighborhood early Sunday morning have been identified, and two suspects have been arrested, police said.
San Diego Police said officers responded to the 100 block of 27th Street shortly after midnight following a report of two people lying on the street. Officers found a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds and attempted lifesaving measures, but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were later identified as 31-year-old Ruben Chavez and 28-year-old Evelyn Virgen, both of San Diego. Investigators said the pair were in a dating relationship.
Police said officers also discovered three young children, all under the age of two, inside a nearby vehicle parked close to the victims. The children were unharmed and later confirmed to be Virgen’s children. They were taken into protective custody.
Homicide detectives determined the couple had been involved in an ongoing dispute with Chavez’s ex-girlfriend, 25-year-old Princess Perez, and her current boyfriend, 21-year-old Ramses “Rex” Morales. Police said both suspects were in the area at the time of the shooting but left before officers arrived.
Later Sunday morning, Perez and Morales were detained by Border Patrol agents at the San Ysidro Port of Entry as they attempted to re-enter the United States. After being interviewed by homicide detectives, both were booked on two counts of murder.
The investigation remains ongoing.
