A driver was rescued early Friday morning after a solo crash sent a vehicle off Interstate 5 northbound near Washington Street and down a steep embankment in Mission Hills.
According to California Highway Patrol dispatch logs, the vehicle left the freeway, broke through a guardrail, and dropped approximately 30 feet toward Washington Street below. The car did not roll over but came to rest behind a fence separating India Street from the freeway.
The driver was able to get out of the vehicle on his own but became trapped behind the fence, unable to reach the street or freeway. Firefighters responded and used power tools to cut through the fencing to reach and extract him.
CHP records indicate the driver appeared relatively uninjured but was evaluated by medics and transported to a hospital as a precaution. Damage to the guardrail and fencing was reported.
The cause of the crash was not immediately released.
