Amazon Left Hanging After La Mesa Freeway Crash

[LA MESA, Calif. — Wed Dec 24, 1:48 a.m.]
An Amazon semi-truck went over a concrete barrier early Wednesday on the Interstate 8 westbound to State Route 125 south connector, leaving the cab suspended over a high overpass above La Mesa streets.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the tractor-trailer lost control on the elevated connector and broke through the K-rail barrier. The crash punctured the truck’s diesel fuel tank, creating a slow fuel leak and prompting a hazardous materials response. Damage to the concrete barrier sent chunks of debris down onto lanes below, affecting traffic on Interstate 8.

Heartland Fire crews, including engines 6 and 9 and Truck 45, responded alongside CHP officers. Authorities shut down the connector ramp and coordinated with Caltrans to assess structural damage to the bridge. Initial reports indicate the ramp will remain closed into Wednesday morning as cleanup and inspections continue. No immediate information was released on injuries.
