SWAT Standoff Ends at City Heights Home

[SAN DIEGO (City Heights) Mon Dec 22, 4:00 p.m.] —
A SWAT standoff shut down part of City Heights for several hours Monday after officers responding to a welfare check reported being shot at by an individual barricaded inside a home on 40th Street.

San Diego police said officers were initially called to the 4400 block of 40th Street for a mental health-related call for service. Shortly after arriving, officers reported gunfire directed at them. No officers were injured, and the individual retreated back inside the residence.

The incident prompted a SWAT callout, with armored vehicles and a command post brought to the scene. Several nearby streets were closed as officers worked to contain the situation and attempt a safe resolution.

Police announced around 7:30 p.m. that the incident had ended and that the individual inside the residence was found deceased. Authorities did not provide details on how the situation concluded, including whether the individual was injured earlier during the incident or he had taken his own life. Police confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public.
