[LAKESIDE, Calif. — Tues Dec. 16, 3:21 p.m.]
Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a daytime shooting in Lakeside that left a 22-year-old man hospitalized and briefly forced nearby schools into lockdown.
The shooting was reported at about 3:21 p.m. in the area of Ashwood Street and Mapleview Street, a busy corridor just south of the Lakeside Rodeo Grounds and El Capitan High School. Deputies arriving on scene found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening and was later treated and released, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
Witnesses told deputies that three men were seen running from the area on foot after the gunfire. Sheriff’s officials said deputies conducted an extensive search, including checking nearby bushes and storm-drain areas, but were unable to locate the suspects.
Early information indicated the shooting may have followed a disturbance between multiple individuals. Deputies focused part of their response on an apartment within a nearby complex, where a surround-and-call-out was conducted. Authorities later determined that no suspect was located inside, and people detained for interviews were released.
Out of an abundance of caution, nearby schools — including El Capitan High School — were temporarily placed on lockdown while deputies searched the area. The Sheriff’s Department said the incident appears to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
During the response, a deputy en route to assist with the incident was involved in a traffic collision nearby and transported to a hospital with what were described as minor injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Lakeside Sheriff’s Substation.
