SDPD Investigating Lakeside Deputy-Involved Shooting Incident

[LAKESIDE, Calif. — Wed Dec 10, 10:30 a.m.]

A welfare check in a Lakeside neighborhood escalated into a deputy-involved shooting Wednesday morning after a man told deputies he was armed and then reached toward his waistband, according to investigators.

Lt. Chris Tivanian of the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit said Lakeside Fire crews and sheriff’s deputies were first called to the 9200 block of Briette Place to check on the man. When personnel arrived, he was gone.

Deputies found him a short distance away on the 13000 block of Pinkard Way. Tivanian said the man told deputies he was carrying a handgun. Commands were given to keep his hands visible, but deputies reported that he did not comply. When he reached into the back of his waistband, one deputy fired a single shot.

“The round missed the individual,” Tivanian said. Deputies took him into custody without further incident. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation, where he remained as of Wednesday afternoon.

Per county protocol, the SDPD Homicide Unit is leading the investigation into the shooting.
