La Mesa Police Surround Home After Gunfire on Panorama Drive

LA MESA — Police surrounded a home in the hills of La Mesa on Wednesday evening after neighbors reported hearing yelling and gunfire.

Lt. Scott Hildebrand said officers were dispatched around 7:13 p.m. to the 4300 block of Panorama Drive after “neighbors reported a disturbance, people yelling at each other, and then two gunshots.”

When officers arrived, they heard another shot from inside the home. “While police officers were formulating a response, they heard an additional gunshot on site,” Hildebrand said.

Police quickly set up a perimeter and called in assistance from the Sheriff’s ASTREA helicopter, an El Cajon Police drone unit, and a Sheriff’s K-9 team. A BearCat armored vehicle was positioned in front of the home, and a Heartland Fire crew staged nearby as a precaution.

After several minutes of verbal commands, three people came out of the residence and were detained without incident. “We were able to ascertain that nobody else was left inside the house, nobody was injured,” Hildebrand said.

Investigators recovered several firearms from inside. One person was arrested for negligent discharge of a firearm, and additional charges may follow.

A dog was removed from the home for safety reasons and was not involved in the incident. The blocked section of Panorama Drive was reopened later that night.
