SAN DIEGO (City Heights) — Police spent the early-morning hours Thursday negotiating with a domestic-violence suspect who climbed onto rooftops and a billboard near El Cajon Boulevard after a foot pursuit.
The incident began around 2:30 a.m. a few blocks away near 50th St when SDPD officers chased a man believed to be involved in a domestic-violence case. In the area of in the 4300 block of 53rd Street, He evaded capture by climbing onto nearby roofs, leaping from an auto-shop to an apartment building at 4382 53rd Street, and at one point onto a billboard above El Cajon Boulevard.
Police established communication, and the man repeatedly threatened to jump while refusing to come down. ABLE helicopter provided overhead support for about 20-30 minutes before clearing the scene, and a police drone was later deployed to keep visual contact. Crisis negotiators took over talks as fire crews stood by for a possible rescue.
As of 4 a.m., officers remained on scene and the standoff was continuing. No injuries were reported.
