SAN DIEGO (College Area) — Fire crews from San Diego, La Mesa, and El Cajon knocked down a garage-area fire early Saturday morning at a small apartment building on Amherst Street.
The blaze was reported just after 2 a.m. at 7105 Amherst St., where smoke was seen coming from a garage with living units above. Firefighters forced open the garage to reach burning items and kept the flames from spreading into the residence.
It was unclear whether the fire started under an exterior stairwell or inside the garage before spreading between the two areas. The Metro Arson Strike Team was called to the scene, along with a K-9 trained to detect accelerants.
No injuries were reported. Damage appeared limited to the garage and stair area, with smoke affecting the unit above. The cause remains under investigation.
