San Diego County Honors Officer Lauren Craven in Final Procession

LA MESA — Hundreds of mourners lined bridges and freeway shoulders across East County on Tuesday morning as the funeral procession for fallen La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven made its way from Snapdragon Stadium to Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego.

The motorcade, led by motorcycle officers and patrol units from across San Diego County, traveled north on Interstate 15, east on State Route 52, then south on SR-125 before turning east onto SR-94 toward the church. Along the way, every overpass seemed to hold a quiet crowd — police officers standing at attention, firefighters in uniform, tow truck drivers and utility workers with their emergency lights flashing, and families holding flags or saluting as the line of vehicles passed.

On the Dallas Street overpass, a row of El Cajon police officers stood beside CHP officers, while local residents gathered shoulder to shoulder. Even an SDG&E service truck parked nearby had its amber lights on in tribute. The mood was somber, with many onlookers wiping away tears as the wail of police sirens echoed faintly through the morning air.

Officer Craven, 25, was killed October 20 while helping crash victims on Interstate 8 in San Diego. She had been with the La Mesa Police Department since early 2024, known among colleagues as professional, kind, and dedicated to her work.

Although I did not know Officer Craven personally, I met her several times in the field — always pleasant, always professional. She represented the best of what a young officer brings to a community: heart, hope, and service. My condolences go to her family, friends, and the entire La Mesa Police Department family.
