SAN DIEGO (City Heights) — Two men were injured early Tuesday when a Border Patrol pursuit ended in a rollover crash off State Route 94 near Kelton Road.
Radio traffic monitored by SD Slackers indicated the chase began around 2:45 a.m. as U.S. Border Patrol agents pursued a dark BMW 328i north on Interstate 805 through the South Bay. The car reportedly struck a Border Patrol unit before continuing onto SR-94, where it turned around and sped east. Minutes later, it veered off the roadway near Kelton Road and landed upside down about 50 feet down into the canyon.
San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded with multiple engines, a truck, and a USAR team. Firefighters descended the steep embankment on foot to reach the wreck, using the ladder truck’s floodlights to illuminate the canyon. Both occupants were removed from the vehicle — one walked out in handcuffs, the other carried up in a rescue basket — and transported to hospitals with unknown injuries.
CHP initially responded but determined the crash occurred off state right-of-way, leaving the investigation to San Diego police. SDPD traffic investigators interviewed Border Patrol agents on scene. Agents twice said a PIO was on the way, but none appeared before the scene cleared. The cause of the pursuit remains under investigation.
