EL CAJON — A woman was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI early Thursday morning after driving the wrong way on State Route 67 and crashing head-on into a pickup truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 1:00 a.m. just north of the Fletcher Parkway off-ramp, where CHP dispatchers received reports of a black Dodge Ram and a red SUV colliding in the southbound lanes. Firefighters from Heartland Fire & Rescue arrived to find both vehicles with major front-end damage and debris scattered across the roadway.
Witnesses told responders the red SUV had been traveling the wrong way before the impact. The female driver of that vehicle was removed from the wreck and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital with undisclosed injuries. CHP officers said she will face felony DUI and wrong-way driving charges once released from medical care.
The pickup driver’s status was not immediately available. All southbound lanes were briefly closed, witht he #3 and #4 lanes closed for approximately an hour while crews cleared the scene and investigators documented evidence. Traffic was fully reopened around 2:00 a.m.
