DUI Crash in Old Town Causes Power Outage

SAN DIEGO (Bay Park)
A white SUV crashed into two power poles on Morena Boulevard early Sunday morning, injuring a passenger and leading to the driver’s arrest for DUI, according to an SDPD officer on scene.

The crash happened just after 2:00 a.m. The vehicle had been traveling west on Morena Boulevard when it failed to follow the curve in the road, went over the curb, and slid about 100 feet before hitting two large wooden electrical poles. One of the poles broke at the base but remained standing, supported by its wires.

A female passenger was taken by Ambulance to UCSD Medical Center. Her condition was not known. The male driver was not injured and was arrested for DUI, according to SDPD.

A nearby witness said he heard the crash and saw sparks and a small explosion at the top of one of the poles. He helped both occupants out of the vehicle before emergency crews arrived.

SDPD and SDFD responded to the scene. SDG&E had been contacted at the time of the crash and later confirmed a power outage affecting the Clairemont, Bay Park, and Morena communities. The utility reported three customers were without power beginning around 5:49 a.m., with repairs expected to be completed by 2:00 p.m. The cause was listed as “a vehicle has come into contact with our electric system.”
