NORTH PARK — A stolen-vehicle stop in the heart of North Park turned tense early Sunday morning when San Diego police held two men at gunpoint outside 3180 University Avenue.
Around 2:30 a.m., officers initiated what they call a “hot stop,” a high-risk procedure used when a vehicle is believed to be stolen or tied to serious crimes. A K-9 barked from a nearby patrol car while officers covered the suspects with weapons drawn. One of the men appeared to argue with officers before both ultimately complied with commands and were detained.
A San Diego police sergeant at the scene confirmed the car was stolen. No one was injured, and no shots or less-lethal rounds were fired. The department’s ABLE helicopter circled overhead during the stop, providing air support.
The incident briefly closed University Avenue in both directions, but concluded without further escalation. Both men were taken into custody for questioning.
