National City, Calif. — Early Sunday morning, a violent three-vehicle collision shut down most of northbound Interstate 5 near Mile of Cars Way for about an hour, sending three people to the hospital.
Witnesses described a Ford F-150 pickup, a Honda sedan, and another car colliding just before 1:30 a.m., scattering debris across four lanes. Firefighters treated several occupants and confirmed three transports by ambulance.
CHP officers closed lanes one through four and issued a SigAlert while tow trucks and sweepers cleared the scene. By around 2:45 a.m., the freeway had mostly reopened.
No word yet on what caused the crash, but investigators say multiple vehicles became involved after the initial pickup truck spun sideways across traffic.
