Car vs. E-Bike in La Mesa

A woman riding an e-bike was injured Sunday afternoon after a collision with a car on Fletcher Parkway in La Mesa.

The crash happened around 4:23 p.m. at the driveway exit for Vine Ripe Market and Chili’s, when a gray Hyundai sedan pulled out onto the eastbound lanes and struck the cyclist, an older adult woman on a small e-bike.

She suffered lower-leg injuries, including a possible broken ankle, and was taken by ambulance for treatment.

La Mesa Police are investigating the collision. It was unclear whether the woman was riding in the bike lane, on the sidewalk, or in the street.

The stretch of Fletcher Parkway where the crash occurred reflects a broader problem in civil design. Critics describe these types of corridors as “stroads”—a combination of streets, which are meant for local traffic and community activity, and roadways, which are designed for higher speeds and volumes. The blending of the two creates ongoing safety conflicts, where drivers exiting retail centers meet fast-moving through traffic, while pedestrians and cyclists try to navigate the same space.

The Hyundai’s driver stayed at the scene, cooperated with officers, and did not appear impaired.
