Small Encampment Brushfire Along I-5 in Bay Park

A small brushfire broke out early Sunday on the northbound side of I-5 just south of the Clairemont Drive off-ramp in Bay Park. Crews from San Diego Fire-Rescue reached the embankment within minutes and quickly knocked down flames that burned roughly a 20-by-20-foot patch of brush.

Firefighters found signs of an encampment in the burn area—shelter materials and scattered debris—complicating overhaul on the steep, brushy slope. Crews remained on scene to dig out hot spots and confirm complete extinguishment. No injuries were reported, and traffic impacts were limited to brief slowdowns near the off-ramp during the response. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
