ABLE Tracks Suspect After CHP Cancels Pursuit Twice

ClairemontTuesday 9/16, 1:04am. A high-speed failure-to-yield that began on I-15 south ended with a foot chase and an arrest in Clairemont after CHP twice shut down the pursuit for safety while SDPD’s ABLE helicopter kept eyes on the fleeing driver.

CHP said the stop started as a simple speed violation but quickly escalated as the black Toyota Camry pushed ~110 mph on SR-163 south, exited Genesee, and tore through neighborhood streets at roughly 100 mph. With traffic light but risk high, CHP canceled the pursuit, leaving ABLE to trail from above.

The driver looped toward Morena Blvd, merged onto I-5 north, and the chase re-engaged. The route continued west on SR-52 and south on I-805, before the Camry again exited Genesee and made at least two wrong-way maneuvers on surface streets. CHP terminated a second time for safety; ABLE never lost him.

Moments later, the driver parked near the 3900 block of Mt Ainsworth Ave, bailed on foot, and ran toward Mt Ainsworth Way and the 6300 block of Mt Aguilar Dr. CHP and SDPD officers moved in and took him into custody inside an apartment complex. No collisions or injuries were reported over the air during the incident. CHP units had positioned for spike strips earlier, though it wasn’t immediately clear if they were used.

Further details, including booking information, were not immediately available.
