A late-night shooting in one of Ocean Beach’s busiest areas left one man dead Wednesday night.
San Diego Police said the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the parking lot just west of Hodad’s, the iconic Newport Avenue burger restaurant. Officers found a man down in the lot, where bystanders and first responders performed CPR for more than 15 minutes. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two suspects are being sought, though early descriptions are tentative—possibly one Hispanic male adult and one Black male adult. Investigators are also looking into reports that a black SUV may have been involved, though that detail has not been confirmed.
The parking lot and surrounding streets were crowded with people at the time of the shooting. Detectives with SDPD Homicide were interviewing witnesses late into the night. Officials said more information would be released once investigators have verified the facts.
This marks another high-profile violent incident in Ocean Beach, raising concerns about late-night safety in the area’s restaurant and nightlife district.
