Wrong-Way Crash on I-8 in La Mesa – Two hospitalized, DUI suspected

La Mesa — A wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 in La Mesa sent two men to the hospital with major injuries Wednesday night.

Around 9:36 p.m., a white Ford Escape entered the westbound lanes of I-8 from the Grossmont Drive exit and began traveling the wrong direction with its headlights reportedly off. The SUV collided head-on with a small silver hatchback, leaving both drivers seriously hurt.

CHP officers said the SUV’s driver, a man suspected of DUI, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The hatchback’s driver, described as an older male, was awake and alert but sustained more severe injuries due to his age. Both were transported to local hospitals.

A third car was clipped in the collision, though that driver escaped injury. Traffic was halted in the westbound lanes for nearly an hour as CHP diverted vehicles off SR-125, flared off lanes, and cleared the crash site.

CHP is handling the investigation and has not yet released the identities of those involved.
