Gaslamp Homicide Arrest

Gaslamp stabbing leaves one dead; suspect arrested after calling police

San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter was the scene of a deadly confrontation Wednesday evening when a man was fatally stabbed inside the Golden West Hotel.

Police said the attack was reported at 6:58 p.m. on the second floor of the hotel at 720 4th Avenue. Responding officers found a 38-year-old man suffering from stab wounds and began emergency care until San Diego Fire-Rescue paramedics took over. The victim was rushed to the hospital but later died. His name has not yet been released, pending family notification.

According to investigators, the suspect fled the scene immediately after the stabbing, but soon phoned SDPD dispatch to surrender. Officers arrested 44-year-old Rene Lunar without incident in the 1500 block of India Street.

Detectives believe the stabbing stemmed from an argument between the men that escalated into violence. The Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
