Man Killed in El Cajon Stabbing, Suspect Arrested

El Cajon — Police say a 59-year-old man died after being stabbed during an altercation Saturday evening in El Cajon, and the suspect — a man with a violent criminal history — is now under arrest.

Officers responded around 5:30 PM to the 900 block of South Sunshine Avenue, where they found the victim suffering from critical injuries in an apartment complex parking lot. He was rushed to the hospital but later died.

According to El Cajon Police Department, “During the altercation, one of the males stabbed the other male, causing severe injury. The victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died. The suspect was located on scene and was arrested.”

Police have identified the suspect as 29-year-old Steven Matthews of La Mesa. Officials noted that Matthews “has extensive criminal history including arrests for assault with a deadly weapon and firearm charges.”

The victim is a 59-year-old man from El Cajon. His name has not been released.
