Freeway Chase Ends in Gunfire on I-15 Near Miramar

San Diego — Friday, August 29, 2025, 4:00 PM

A dramatic freeway chase that began in Escondido ended in gunfire Friday afternoon near the I-15/163 split by Miramar, after a 50-year-old female suspect attempted to drive head-on into freeway traffic.

Escondido police officers initiated the pursuit after identifying the woman as wanted on warrants (Code 37F). The chase headed south on I-15, stretching through Mid-City where the suspect cut through a bus lane and briefly drove the wrong way on the freeway before turning back northbound.

The pursuit continued into Kearny Mesa and back onto the freeway, with San Diego police units and the ABLE helicopter joining in. Officers monitoring the chase discussed the possibility of lethal force after the suspect repeatedly tried to make U-turns across the freeway, putting other drivers at deadly risk.

As the suspect reached the Miramar area and turned south again, she slowed near the I-15/163 split, made a sudden U-turn, and drove directly into oncoming traffic. Officers pinned her vehicle and opened fire.

The suspect was struck by multiple rounds—reportedly as many as ten—and was transported to a hospital by ambulance. Her condition remains unknown. It is also not clear what police agency fired rounds, or possibly multiple agencies.

Southbound lanes of I-15 were closed by CHP and Caltrans, creating severe traffic delays through the evening rush. The incident remains under investigation by Escondido police and San Diego PD. It is likely that the SD Sheriff’s will investigate since this is an OIS, or Officer Involved Shooting, per the county wide MOU.
