Tense North Clairemont Standoff: Suspect Doused in Lighter Fluid, Threatened Suicide

(Update 8.16.25 9:45pm – Our sources have told us that the suspect surrendered to police around 5am without further incident)

San Diego — A domestic violence call in the North Clairemont neighborhood turned into an overnight standoff after a man armed with a knife refused to surrender to police.

San Diego Police were called to a home in the 3600 block of Argonne Street around 11:30 p.m. Friday after a man returned home, argued with relatives, and allegedly swung a knife at them. Family members managed to wrestle the knife away and fled the house before calling 911.

When officers arrived, the suspect refused to come out, shouting angrily and making suicidal statements. SDPD requested a Code 11 response, which brought in specialized SWAT units.

The standoff quickly became extremely tense. The man’s anger and aggression were described as very high. At one point he begged police to shoot him, saying he did not want to live. He covered himself in lighter fluid and waved a cigarette lighter, creating fears of fire, while also motioning toward the knife tucked in his waistband as if he were about to cut his own throat.

Negotiators had a difficult time calming him down or moving him toward a resolution. Over the next several hours, officers attempted to stabilize the situation and at one point deployed bean bag rounds to try to gain compliance. By 3:00 a.m., tactical teams were still moving into position.

As of late Saturday morning, no update had been released by SDPD regarding the resolution of the incident.
