CHP Stops Speeding Tesla in San Diego, Finds Drugs, Cash, and Weapon

A traffic stop by California Highway Patrol late Tuesday night uncovered more than just speeding. A Tesla Model Y pulled over near Euclid Avenue on westbound SR-94 led officers to a stash of suspected drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a restricted weapon.

The driver appeared to be under the influence of narcotics. During the search, CHP officers found baggies of suspected methamphetamine and liquid meth, a digital scale, needles, and about $1,000 in cash. Also recovered were multiple cell phones—a sign often associated with drug trafficking—and an extendable baton, which under California law is considered an illegal weapon for civilians.

While enforcement of the baton ban has been challenged in federal court, California Penal Code §22210 still allows prosecutors to charge possession of such weapons as a misdemeanor or felony.

The driver was arrested at the scene. CHP is awaiting toxicology and lab results to confirm the substances involved.
