LAKESIDE — In a crash that easily could’ve been fatal, a driver walked away from a destroyed convertible after launching off the I-8 East Lake Jennings Park Road offramp at what witnesses said was close to 100 miles an hour.
The crash happened just before 3 AM Thursday morning. According to reports, the driver lost control coming off the exit and veered off the right side of the roadway. His vehicle slammed through a yellow roadside sign, then plunged down a steep embankment.
The car went nose-first into the dirt, flipping end over end before striking a tree. It came to rest roughly 20 feet away, crumpled and mangled—but miraculously in one piece.
Despite the violent crash, the driver climbed out on his own and was evaluated by medics. He was later detained on suspicion of DUI and taken to San Diego County Jail.
California Highway Patrol is investigating.
