Minivan Crashes Off Freeway, Knocks Out Power in Southeastern San Diego

Driver Flees After Causing 94 Freeway Collision That Ends in Rollover Near F Street A dramatic crash on eastbound State Route 94 near 30th Street left a trail of destruction Sunday night when a two-vehicle collision caused a minivan to launch off the freeway, flip, and land in a residential neighborhood — narrowly missing a homeless encampment and knocking out power to over 260 customers. The crash occurred at approximately 9:11 PM when a second vehicle collided with the van and then fled the scene. The van spun out of control, shot up the embankment, flipped, and struck a tree and guy wires for a utility pole before coming to rest upright facing the wrong way near 3077 F Street. San Diego Fire crews and SDG&E responded to manage power hazards and evaluate whether the van had become energized by the damaged electrical infrastructure. A nearby resident said the impact felt like an earthquake: “I heard a big boom and the house shook. The power went out — I thought it was an earthquake.” Once SDG&E cleared the vehicle as safe to touch, two tow trucks worked together to winch it out of the steep embankment and drag it up to the street level. The van’s occupants declined ambulance transport, while the other driver remains at large. CHP is leading the investigation and treating the case as a hit-and-run.
